The new year is here and the Auxiliary is already gearing up for an exciting year of
Fundraising and giving back to the Hospital.

It is a long tradition for the Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary that we celebrate the
arrival of the first baby born in our hospital each year. The mother is given a
bouquet of flowers specially made for her by our Flower Power group.

The baby is given a teddy bear and other gifts including a hand knitted layette

the words, I was born at Peace Arch Hospital on it.

We want to thank everyone in the community for supporting our many sales and
activities that we held this year – everyone who participates in our fundraisers
from bridge luncheons, golf tournament, Naughty and Ice, linen sales, grinch tree
sales bake sales and Jewellery Sales.
Leading up to Christmas many people including the staff at the hospital supported
our sales in the Hospital cafeteria, did some shopping and bought goodies at our
numerous bake sales.
This past Christmas season many customers were able to do some of their
seasonal shopping at our Gift Shop located in the lobby of the hospital.
The support of our Gift Shop helps with our fundraising.

help make it a success.

AUXILIARY NOTES: Auxiliary equipment purchases aid in patient care

The Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary purchases many types of equipment each year that helps save the lives of our patients.  In this present fiscal year, we have purchased three scopes for the surgical out patient department.  Each one costs about $20,000. The scopes last a long time because they are looked after so well by all the staff who come in contact with them but the new ones replaced some that were 12 to 15 years old and could no loner be repaired.

Surgical scopes are made of flexible materials and many have cameras attached to them in order for the doctors to get a clear picture of the area that is being examined.

The minor procedures done by scopes can be done as an out patient basis, saving time for all involved.

Doctors use scopes for numerous reasons, but one of the most important ones is the early detection of abnormalities.    This means that the patient can get faster care and lives are saved, because problems are diagnosed earlier.

On February 11th the Aquarius group is hosting a jewelry sale in the hospital cafeteria from 9:00 am until 3:00 p.m. These items make a perfect Valentines day gift for that special person.

There will be a huge selection of gold, silver and costume jewelry.   There will be designer items made in Denmark and 5th Avenue Jewelry.  All funds raised are donated to the Auxiliary.

The Gift shop in the hospital lobby is receiving new items.  Clothing, handbags and scarves and small gift items for spring are arriving each week.

Spring flowers are being put in the cooler by our flower power group.  What better way to celebrate the end of winter than with some fresh flowers?  They bring joy to everyone.

The Superfluity Shop on Prospect Avenue is bursting with new items for Valentines day.   They have all manner of giftware as well as clothing which arrives daily.  The boutique is a treasure trove with everything for the fashionista in the family.

The Auxiliary is always looking for new members.  We need volunteers with cashier experience for the two retail shops.

Volunteer shifts are flexible with a minimum commitment for a four-hour shift once a week.  Men are also needed to help at the Superfluity Shop.

If you would like to join, please pick up a membership package at the information desk at the hospital or at the Superfluity Shop (located at 15163 Prospect Ave.)

AUXILIARY NOTES: New venues, but same enthusiasm remains

This is the time of the year The Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary is starting to get ready for our seasonal sales.

The hospital is under construction and we will no longer be able to hold sales in the lobby. We will be holding sales in the cafeteria and other locations in the community.

The Semiahmoo group is hosting a sale at the Star of The Sea Hall which is located at 1153 Fir Street on October 6 th . They will be selling collectibles, white elephant,
china and jewelry from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

This same group will be having a bake sale on October 19th in the Peace Arch Hospital cafeteria. There will be lots of great homemade goodies for sale.

On October 20th the Kwatcha a group is holding their famous linen sale. This event was started by The Goodwill group and the Kwatcha group took it over in 1999. They began by selling wedding dresses and evolved to selling not just linens, but also selling collectables.  This sale outgrew the hospital lobby and was moved to First United Church. The linen sale is on the move again and now the sale will be at the Elks Hall on George Street.

The doors open at 9 a.m. and will close at 3 p.m.
The energetic leader of the Kwatcha group is Carol Sallenback, who gets donations dropped off to her home every week. She also gets phone calls from people as far away as Vancouver Island and the Sunshine coast inquiring about this event.
Customers and collectors always look forward to this fundraiser.  This sale will feature lots of collectables including china. There are three complete sets of English Bone China for sale as well as fine crystal.

The linens this year include not only table linens – which are all washed, starched and ironed – but there are also many bedspreads and comforters. Seasonal items including Christmas tea towels, and placemats, some that have never been used are always useful.
Over the many years of this sale the Kwatcha group has donated over $200.000 to support the purchase of equipment for the hospital. This contribution is only possible because of the dedication of the hard – working volunteers and the community that not only donates the items that are for sale, but also support the sale.

The Auxiliary is always looking for new members. Men are needed to help at our Superfluity Thrift shop. If you would like to join this energetic group of people please pick up a membership package at the information desk at the hospital or at the Superfluity Shop located at 15163 Prospect Avenue, or on our website at www.pahas.ca.
